“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
Maya Angelou
I am a huge fan of Maya Angelou. Her words touch something deep within me.
I love this quote from a life lens, and even more from a therapy lens. To me, it captures something really important about being human: the best we can do will look different at every point in our lives. As we learn more, we grow. And when we grow, we often begin to do things differently.
Life isn’t static. It’s constantly changing, and we change along with it.
We don’t know what we don’t know.
In therapy, so much of the work is about building awareness. Once we have that awareness, we gain the opportunity to shift. We can change patterns, respond differently, and choose a new way forward if we want to.
It’s not about shaming ourselves (or others) for past mistakes or things we did in ignorance. It’s about growing in awareness, taking accountability, and, if needed, doing things differently.
